A Technomage’s crest

This is a partly functional, partly decorative piece for a costume. A Technomage - a magician whose magical illusions are in fact technological - does, of course, need a family crest - right? The piece also obscures a radiator for dispersing waste heat, subtly hidden behind the copper. It attaches and is worn on the back, mounted to a coat that’s also adapted for the show!

I designed the crest, which went through a lot of iterations, partly using AI tools. The bird devices began as an output from Dall-E, but needed a lot of editing and adjustment to make them suitable. The runic devices also started their life in Dall-E, before having lots of manual editing. The rest of the crest is designed by me, around the theme of odd numbers - the pentagon and heptagon in the middle, the triangle below, and the bottom section of a nonagon linking the birds’ feet.

I cut the copper plate into a circle using a Shaper Origin. On the rear, a spiral is engraved, also with the Shaper, and copper pipe soldered in place for the water cooling loop. I polished the front and then primed and painted it using Black 3.0. I used a laser cutter to burn away the paint, allowing the copper to show through and creating the design. The leather pieces are also laser cut, and then the copper plate mounted to the leather using M3 screws and brass stand-offs, which were soldered to the back of the plate.
