A stumpy ornament

One cold January morning the year before the Pandemic hit, I was putting out the Christmas tree for collection and noticed that the stump was just about big enough to make something from. And voila! The Christmas tree Christmas tree ornament made out of an old Christmas tree was born. It tickles me.

Processes

I cut the stump off the tree, trimmed off the bottom and mounted it between centres on the lathe. I cut it down to a cylinder with a roughing gouge, then cut the profile using a spindle gouge, and neatened up the corners with a skew. I sanded it and oiled it, and added a small brass eyelet and ribbon to finish it off.

As much as this tickled me, I wouldn’t do it again. Having been sat in water for the best part of a month, the wood was very wet, and turning it made me very wet, and covered in pine resin.
